I wish I would’ve known these smart decorating tips at the beginning of my journey. But, like Maya Angelou said….. Do the best you can until you know better, then when you know better, do better. The more I decorate the better I get and I’m sure the same will be for you.

Get Inspired

If you want to do something different with your space and not exactly sure what, then INSPIRE YOURSELF. You can find inspiration for almost anything looking online. It really helps get the creativity going searching online images and finding what you are attracted to within your personal style; family rooms, offices, porches, bedrooms, window treatments, stairways, furniture layouts, nurseries, patios, garages, or even placement of accessories.

But if you are the more hands on type and actually need a visual for your space, visit model homes that are similar to what space you are working with. I have a great eye for layout and decor and I still had to go with the hands on approach and went to see models that were similar to my house. I downsized into a ranch style open floor plan and I couldn’t figure out where to put my couch and accent chairs in this smaller space with how the windows and fireplace were located.

It looks great now, but I need inspiration too. Looking at model homes is actually a hobby of mine. I love when they have the smell of fresh baked cookies floating thru the air. That helps my inspiration, ha-ha. But if they had the smell of bacon in those homes, I’d probably get myself in trouble. While you’re walking thru the models, take pictures of the decor ideas you like.

Create A Vision For Your Space

Plan your decorating adventure.

As you are gathering inspirational images or pictures you have taken, copy and paste them into a document so you can see them as a whole. Add in color schemes and patterns, along with pictures of what you already have and want to reuse in your space.

You might put your ideas together and realize it doesn’t look quite right. When you are ready to make changes or purchases this will save time and money. Just going and buying random things you think are cool may not be cohesive with your space, especially, if you tend to be eclectic with your style.

I like almost everything. I have to think about my desired goal for the space and focus on one room at a time. As you finalize your vision for the room you can also price point out what the cost will be to make the change and decide what you want to do first.

To Paint or Not to Paint

Painting is the fastest way to transform and freshen any room in your space.

Update the look of your space with a fresh paint color. Painting makes a huge difference right out of the gate. My daughter bought her first home. It was a nice home with good bones, but a little dated. She wanted to make it her own so she painted the walls, trim, doors and kitchen cabinets.

The outcome was AMAZING. Within ONE day she transformed the entire look of ONE room and made it look current and fresh. It was such a great change she kept painting room after room. Her house looks fabulous.

If you aren’t up for painting an entire room, paint an accent wall in the space to add some “Pop” to your room. Make sure your accent wall color coordinates with the rest of your wall color, maybe go a few shades darker. Another way to pick a paint color is to find a color that is in some of your accessories; bedding, window treatments or pillows.

Tie everything together with color

Painting accessories can change the look of a room too. I’ll paint anything to give it an update or make it work with a change I’m making in my decor. I have even painted a washer and dryer. They were white and had been moved many times and were pretty scratched up. I thought, I can’t make them look any worse, so I painted them with a swirling gray color design. Yeah, it sounds nuts, but I had people ask to come over to see my washer and dryer because they heard how great they looked. I never thought that beat up washer and dryer would be the focal point in my over sized laundry/storage room. Oh yeah, I painted the walls and concrete too. That old basement laundry room went from dreary to looking fresh and fabulous. So, YES, paint!!!

More Great Tips

  • You can take your collected ideas and duplicate them with a twist. The twist being, create the same idea but at a price you can afford.
  • You can get very close to the same look re purposing what you already have, buying from discount stores, art and craft stores and even thrift stores.
  • Hang your drapes or curtains all the way up to the ceiling to add a more dramatic presentation. It also makes the ceiling look higher.
  • When buying living room furniture, go with a solid colored sofa and patterned chairs.
  • Keep your older accent pillows but put on a new pillow cover for a fresh look.
  • Thrift store finds can give a collected over time look to your space.
  • Furniture doesn’t have to match. Mismatched pieces in your space are okay as long as they have a cohesive look.
  • Artificial plants and flowers in mixed containers are a great way to bring color into your space and you don’t have to water them.
  • Placing color throughout the room causes the eyes to move around and enjoy the space.
  • Clock walls are a fun focal wall.
  • Pillows and throws make a space cozy.
  • Painting a frame a new color changes the look of the picture.
  • Rugs are a great way to cover up less than perfect floors.
  • Good decorating pulls the eye away from less attractive features in a space.
